Dealing with your high sensitivity consciously

Social isolation

Highly sensitive people often translate the great pressure they experience or being overwhelmed by emotions as fear. However, these phenomena become more manageable when they are recognized as a highly sensitive reaction.

Don’t immediately label yourself as an anxious person. Take a sober look at what is going on, what is bothering you and how you can help yourself with it. And don’t hide your highly sensitive nature from yourself and others, communicate about it. Try to calculate your possible reactions in a number of situations. The more consciously you deal with your high sensitivity, the better you will feel.

Are you highly sensitive?

Highly sensitive persons:

• have a highly developed empathy , are caring but also often afraid of hurting others and may therefore have difficulty saying ‘no’ and being assertive;

• take in all kinds of subtle signals that others often don’t notice. The large amount of stimuli from outside or from within can be stressful and tiring and therefore quickly change the mood;

• quickly feel responsible for other people’s problems and respond to them with grooming, often at the expense of their own needs. They can worry about it and feel guilty if they don’t think they can help someone enough, which makes them easily over their own limits;

feeling others

• can quickly sense when someone is having a hard time or worrying about something. If they are insecure, this can often work on their negative fantasy when they are not told what is really going on;

• can experience the behavior of other people strongly . If this comes in with full force, an injury can hit hard and linger too long;

• are often very intuitive by nature, but often need to practice learning to let go of superfluous information and learn to deal effectively with this protective quality, so that they can enjoy it more;

Sensitive body

• have a sensitive body system and can react quickly and violently to heat and cold and to unsuitable food, drink, unclean air, busy environment or to lack of food or drink on time. They are sensitive to pain in themselves and others. And allergies are also quite common;

• are dutiful, like depth and therefore often have a stimulating role in their environment; • can enjoy intensely, have a sense of humor and a tendency to perfectionism;

Excitement and creativity

• often do not cope well with violent impressions and tension. A reason to limit its influence through films, news and newspapers;

• have a rich emotional life , a lot of feeling and an eye for beauty. They have a great imagination that often makes them creative, but when fueled by negative thoughts, this can also make them too worrisome;

• often work passionately and successfully or have many hidden ambitions and talents , because they compared themselves negatively with others at an early age and got stuck in that.

Exercise: Consciously dealing with your high sensitivity

The following exercise helps you to consciously deal with the themes in the overview above. You can do one, several, or all themes at a time.

Every day for a week, write down:

  • when you helped someone else and wanted to help and why. And when you felt responsible for another;
  • if and when you felt guilty and why;
  • when you had a sudden mood swing and why. What was your mood before, how afterwards and how you experienced that;
  • when you felt hurt lately and why and how you dealt with it. See if you see a recurring pattern in it;
  • when you got tired, what you did to prevent it, what you did for your health in general, and what else you could do;
  • what you enjoyed, why and how and write down what you laughed about that day;
  • what you liked about yourself and why;
  • what your talents are and what you did with them this week and would like to do more.
