Desiderata – Be calm amid the noise and rush

The American lawyer Max Ehrmann (1872-1945) wrote extensively on spiritual matters. His world famous poem “Desiderata” (Latin for “desired things”) is a poem that has a positive message.

The myth is that the poem Desiderata was found in a Baltimore church in 1692 and is centuries old, of unknown origin. Desiderata was actually written around 1920 and copyrighted in 1927, by Ehrmann

Many people debate the meaning and analysis of Desiderata, but whatever its history and significance, Ehrmann’s prose is inspiring and offers a simple positive credo for life.

Be quiet in the midst of the noise and haste, and think what peace there may be in the silence .

Be on good terms with all people, without denying yourself.
Speak your truth calmly and clearly and listen to others,
including those who are stupid and ignorant for they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive people, they are a torment to the mind.
When you compare yourself with others, you can become vain or bitter,
because there will always be people who are bigger or smaller than you are.
Enjoy what you have achieved as well as your plans.

Stay interested in your own work, however simple it may be,
for in the vicissitudes of time, it is a real possession.
Be careful when doing business because the world is full of deceit.
But don’t let this blind you to the virtue that is there,
after all, many people strive for high ideals and life is full of heroism.

be yourself.
Above all, don’t fake affection.
Nor be cynical about love,
for in all aridity and disillusionment it is eternal as the grass.

Joyfully accept the wisdom of the years,
renounce the things of your youth with grace.
Build your mental resilience to protect you in the face of unexpected adversity.
Don’t torture yourself with ghosts.
Many fears are born of fatigue or loneliness.
Put a healthy discipline on yourself, but be kind to yourself in the process.

You are a child of the universe,
nothing less than the trees and the stars.
You have the right to be here.
And whether you understand it or not, yet the universe will unfold as it unfolds and that’s right.

Therefore live in peace with God, whatever image you have of Him.
And whatever your work and endeavor may be,
in the noisy maelstrom of life, keep your soul at peace.

With all its tinsel, gloom and bygone dreams, this is still a beautiful world.
Stay cheerful.
Strive for happiness and contentment.
