Five tips to take it easy

Five tips to take it easy

Even though it seems that nowadays everything has to be faster, better, and more efficient, you can always change something. Start small and grow. Really, slowing down is one of those supposedly little things that can really change your life.

Below are some suggestions that can help you slow down.

1. Take more time than usual for some things

Gently raise your cup to your lips, don’t rush while eating, let others finish without interrupting them, and leisurely walk to an appointment instead of racing there. Finish one before starting the other. Breathe in and out long and slowly several times a day.

2. Do not press the accelerator pedal so deeply

Once, while we were driving on the highway, my wife muttered, “Why are you in such a hurry?” She made me realize that slowing down a few miles per hour means arriving just a few minutes late, but being able to relax a lot more along the way.

3. Phone as a reminder

When the phone rings, you can pretend this is a church bell or temple bell, reminding you to breathe in and out slowly and deeply. (This is an exercise of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh).

4. Your own rhythm

Don’t be rushed by others to do things faster and earlier than is really necessary. Their lack of planning need not cause you to be unnecessarily rushed.

5. In the now

Look at what’s good about this moment as it is, then you feel less need to look for something else. For example, if you’re on hold for a phone call, you can look around until something beautiful or interesting catches your eye. You can also simply enjoy the peaceful moment or your breathing.
