Forgiveness is the key to happiness.

The lesson for today is truly mind-boggling in its simplicity, and confrontational in its honesty. It is simply about the forgiveness in your mind, in letting go of all your thoughts about something and someone, and letting the light in you do its work.

The unforgiving mind is full of fear and offers love no room to be itself, no place where it can spread its wings in peace and soar above the noise of the world. The unforgiving mind is sad, without hope of respite and release from pain. He suffers and is in misery, peering about in darkness, seeing nothing, yet sure of the danger lurking there.

This is the state you are in when you hold a grievance about something or someone. No matter what it is, no matter how just it seems, a grievance or a pain based on the past keeps you captive. You are behind bars of tears of sorrow, a stabbing pain in your stomach, a heavy burden on your shoulders. It’s exhausting, depressing, and there seems to be no way out. Now Jesus appears before you and offers you the key to salvation. You open the door and suddenly you see: the solution lies within me. I can make another choice.

Forgiveness is acquired. It is not inherent in the mind, which cannot sin. Since sin is an idea that you have taught yourself, forgiveness must also be learned by you, but from a Teacher other than yourself, who represents the other Self in you. Through Him you learn how to forgive the self that you think you have made, and make it disappear. Thus you return your mind as one to Him Who is your Self, and can never sin.

Today’s lesson provides you with the tools for release from all pain and sense of loss. It is the awakening of your mind, the letting in of the light that is your natural heritage. You are shown very specifically what to do to experience forgiveness.Every unforgiving mind offers you an opportunity to teach yours to forgive itself.

That’s an incredible phrase, because it brings everything back to you. It’s not about anyone else,  you  can change your mind right now by taking total responsibility for everything that seems to be happening to you. That no matter what seems to happen or how you are treated, there is a peace in you that nothing can touch. It’s the peace of God.

Jesus forgiveness
Jesus forgivenessBegin the longer practice periods by thinking of someone you don’t like, who seems to irritate you, or who seems to repulse you if you meet him; someone you actually despise, or just try to ignore. It doesn’t matter what form your anger takes. You’ve probably already picked him. He’s suitable.

Now close your eyes and picture him in your mind and look at him for a while. Try to detect some light somewhere in him, a faint glow that you had never noticed before. Try to find a glimmer of brightness that shines through the ugly image you hold of him. Look at this image until you see a light somewhere in it, and then try to let this light expand until it encompasses it and make the image beautiful and good.

Jesus knows you very well. He knows that as soon as you read about someone you don’t like, who annoys you, a name or face comes to mind. And that person, that face, is now your savior. It is an awakening moment when you recognize that who you thought was your enemy is now your savior. That his light is your salvation. You never expected that, but it is the key to awakening.

Look at this altered perception for a while and then turn your attention to someone you call a friend. Try to transfer to him the light you have learned to see around your former ‘enemy’. See him now as more than a friend to you, for in that light his holiness shows you your savior, redeemed and redeeming, healed and whole.

What a great gift. Through the application of the lesson every idea about enemy and friend changes, and you recognize that everything is used for your salvation. You can remember at this moment who you are, the holy Son of God, by recognizing your brother.

This has nothing to do with special preferences, with relationships or friendships. The stranger you meet on the street can show you Heaven. It really is that simple.
