High sensitivity: this way you can better understand your highly sensitive partner
Is your partner highly sensitive and is this difficult for you to understand? Would you like to treat your partner’s high sensitivity with respect and support your partner in a constructive way? This article gives tips to better understand your partner and what you can expect from your partner.

What you can do as a non-highly sensitive partner:

  • Immerse yourself in high sensitivity. You can do this by reading about it or, for example, attending a lecture once.
  • Then talk to your partner.  High sensitivity manifests itself differently in everyone. How does your partner experience his/her high sensitivity? Listen to this without judgment. Ask each other questions and listen with respect.
  • Be patient with your partner. If you know that highly sensitive people are more sensitive to stress, you can imagine that putting pressure on your partner is counterproductive. For example, switching to the existing plans can take time for some HSPs.
  • Do you realize that if you are overstimulated, it is better to leave your partner alone for a while? Having a good conversation with someone who can store almost nothing is not productive. Then postpone the good conversation for a while (don’t adjust it!), until your highly sensitive partner is feeling better again.
  • And finally,  take your highly sensitive partner seriously. Being highly sensitive is hard enough for some people. Support your partner and take her/his experiences, feelings, and thoughts seriously. You don’t have to solve them, often you just have to listen and be there for someone.
