How a glass of lemon water can help ward off chronic inflammation

How a glass of lemon water can help ward off chronic inflammation
Lemon has a healing effect and reduces chronic inflammation. This article explains what causes chronic inflammation and what a glass of lemon juice does to you.

Lemon reduces chronic inflammation

Stiff or painful joints are often the first sign of (rheumatic) arthritis or osteoarthritis. It is often said that this is wear and tear and that it is not reversible. However, this usually turns out not to be the real cause.

Rheumatoid arthritis in particular involves chronic inflammation in the body, but this inflammatory component is also present in osteoarthritis.

Chronic inflammation in the body is caused by, among other things, an unhealthy diet and nutritional deficiencies. So by changing your diet you can cope with them.  Accumulation of uric acid is a major cause of chronic inflammation. And guess what: lemon juice helps to remove uric acid from joints! That’s your first win.

Lemon also reduces oxidative stress

In addition to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress also plays a major role in painful joints. Oxidation occurs in response to oxygen in the air. Cut avocado will develop brown spots within an hour. That’s oxidation. Oxidation can be counteracted with antioxidants. Sprinkle the avocado with lemon and it will brown less quickly.

Oxidation can be counteracted with free radical scavengers or antioxidants.

Lemon contains a lot of vitamin C, which is known as a powerful antioxidant. Thus, the free radicals are reduced. That’s your second win.

It contributes to hormone balance

Our health is largely determined by our hormones. For hormone balance, it is necessary to keep the body in the correct acid-base ratio. Our daily diet with a lot of carbohydrates, sweets, and processed food (which contains a lot of wheat, soy, and sugar) creates a body that is actually too acidic. Besides the fact that our hormones get out of balance as a result, chronic inflammations now also get a chance.

A body with a build-up of acid waste is also a cause of chronic inflammation.

Lemon is one of the most basic foods out there. Basic (or alkaline) is the opposite of acid. By starting every morning with a large glass of water with lemon, you make your body more alkaline. That is healthier for you in several ways.

Lemon juice helps with waste removal

Lemon supports your liver in removing waste and toxic substances from your body, such as the acid waste mentioned above. It does this, among other things, by stimulating the liver to produce more enzymes that ensure detoxification.

These waste products are also in your stomach and intestines. A large glass of warm water with lemon on an empty stomach flushes the empty stomach and intestines and takes away the waste products that are there. Your liver is especially active when you sleep, so it is important to remove these waste products immediately in the morning.

It can also prevent constipation and help you with a daily bowel movement.

Drinking the water with lemon also activates your lymphatic system; that enormous system (200,000 km in everyone’s body!) that takes care of the removal of waste.

It gives energy because it hydrates

All women of the Nutrition Compass know this too: I advise them all to drink 2 liters of water daily. We often drink far too little water.

Every top athlete knows that even a slight degree of dehydration significantly reduces his/her performance.

Drinking water is the easiest way to get more energy, keep your brain working, keep your blood pressure at the right level  (1), sleep better, and fight stress. Just to name a few positive consequences of this. Especially a glass of water with lemon on an empty stomach, after you have not drunk anything for 8 hours, can make a big difference in how you feel that day.

Do you have high blood pressureDrink 2 liters of water throughout the day for a few days and measure it again.

It’s good for your overall digestion

Starting the day with a glass of lukewarm water with lemon has even more benefits for your digestive systemPeople with heartburn problems often have too little stomach acid, not too much.

Citric acid supports the stomach in the production of gastric acid and thus helps the entire digestive tract down the road. This can potentially prevent abdominal pain and cramps.

Lemon has antibacterial properties

Our grandmothers already advised us to take extra vitamin C with the flu and colds. Good advice, because lemons work well against bacterial and even viral infections thanks to their high dose of vitamin C. It is therefore advisable to drink lemon juice with emerging flu or cold.

If you drink a glass of water with lemon every day, you reduce the chance of a flu or cold

But urinary tract infections, which many women regularly suffer from, can also be prevented by such a daily glass of lemon juice. Lemon juice has a diuretic effect, which also prevents bacterial growth here.

Suffering from bad breath? That’s bacteria too! Drink lemon water in the morning, that saves a sip on a drink!

Do you want more beautiful skin, fewer wrinkles, and a better mood?

We have known for a long time that food plays a major role in how we look. Vitamin C in lemon promotes the production of collagen, which in turn ensures more beautiful skin and fewer wrinkles.

A study of 4000 women between the ages of 40 and 74  (2) showed that a higher intake of vitamin C resulted in more beautiful skin and fewer wrinkles.

Finally, study (3) showed that the smell of lemon alone had a positive effect on the mood of the test subjects. The feeling of stress decreased and their mood increased. So if you are stressed, the aroma of lemon can give your mood a boost.

Do it in three steps

Just a few additional tips, as easy as it may seem. Many bacteria accumulate in your mouth during the night. It is therefore wise to first rinse your mouth with water and spit it out or brush your teeth.

Then heat a large mug of water and squeeze half a lemon. Add the lemon juice to the warm water and drink it in small sips all at once before breakfast.

Never tap hot water directly from the tap, hot water takes dirty particles from the pipes with it

The acid of lemon damages the enamel of teeth. Therefore, rinse your mouth a few times with lukewarm water to remove the acid. If you are not used to drinking water on an empty stomach, it can make you a bit nauseous. Start with small amounts and build up slowly as your body adjusts.
