What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is the body’s own stress hormone. It is produced in the adrenal cortex. This hormone activates the sympathetic nervous system, the stress part of your autonomic nervous system. In the event of danger or high pressure, a fight or flight response is evoked. Your pupils dilate, your breathing speeds up, your heart beats faster, your muscle tone increases, your digestion pauses, and your immune system is also flattened. You are ready to run or attack.

Continued stress can lead to stomach and intestinal disorders, heart problems, and illnesses such as the flu. Prolonged production of cortisol also damages part of the brain. This part (hippocampus) is also associated with memory, hence the confusion and memory problems. Ultimately, sustained cortisol production can lead to burnout and even depression.
