Hugging as an energy giver: this is how you demonstrably give someone energy with your hug
When our brain is busy processing information and impressions during the day, it is important for balance when it comes to rest in the evening and at night. However, falling asleep after a busy day can sometimes be difficult, because our brain is still on. This can cause chronic stress and even lead to burnout. This article explains what you can do to get some rest and relax mentally in order to prevent or remedy burnout.

Three basic principles

To prevent or remedy a burnout, it is first of all important to familiarize yourself with the following basic principles:

  • Silence and slow down
  • Take control of your own life
  • Create or restore body awareness

Below are some tips to help you work on these basics.

1. Meditate

Suffering from chronic stress? Tips to relax mentally

Meditation is one of the ways you can find stillness and calm your mind. It is the most simple and effective way to calm your mind. Just like breathing, you can do it anytime, anywhere, you don’t need anything to do it.

When you close your eyes and start meditating without any conditions or framework, your mind will soon stop. This way your mind comes to rest and the input of external stimuli is temporarily stopped. If you start meditating, it is best to determine a duration in advance and set an alarm. In addition, it is important to focus on something during your meditation. This can be done, for example, by means of a body scan or by focusing on your breathing.

2. Slow down

Because the pace of life is very high for many, it can be good to literally slow down every now and then and thus take some gas back. By slowing down you are better able to perceive situations and see what is really there. That way you live more consciously. Your life has more value when you live ‘at the moment. What matters is that you live with attention and that you do some self-reflection every now and then.

3. Do nothing

Sometimes it can also be valuable to do nothing at all, although it often turns out not to be that easy. Sometimes it’s good to just stare ahead. You may see this as “useless” or “a waste of your time.” But it is precisely the moments when you do nothing that are of great value. Because just like with meditation, your mind comes to rest. Do you want to do nothing more often than maybe?

4. Phone off

The smartphone has become an integral part of our daily life. Yet more and more people are consciously withdrawing from their phones and that is actually not so wrong. I’m not saying you should throw your phone out the window right away. But sometimes turning off your phone is good for peace of mind. You are constantly distracted by the phone, preferably you want to check your phone every minute.

You can see endless scrolling on Facebook and Instagram as mental pollution. When you come home from work in the evening, you can safely put your phone on airplane mode for a few hours. Do you still find this difficult? Then start with turning off your phone for an hour and build it up slowly.

5. Move

By moving I mean consciously using your body by occasionally challenging it, turning it on so that your system is shaken awake. This is important because with our current, prosperous existence we do not necessarily have to look for the challenge. Take yourself on a challenge every now and then and go for a run, take a long walk or exercise.
