This is how winter depression develops, according to Chinese Medicine
Many of us are experiencing a winter dip, especially now. “It happens when feelings are so overwhelming that they paralyze you. You have the idea that there is no longer any distinction between you and your sadness or fear. This article gives tips on how to literally move from the dark to the light.

Autumn and winter force us, as it were, to deal with less pleasant emotions.

Energy flow stagnates

Now that the dark days also coincide with all kinds of limitations of our social contacts, you hear it more and more: people who suffer from a winter dip. What is that when you look at it from Chinese Medicine and the principles of yin and yang? And what are you doing about it?

When do you have depression? And when is your mood a natural response to the season? It is quite normal that your state of mind is less exuberant in the winter than in the spring and summer. It’s even healthy. But if you linger in your gloom and no longer experience a single bright spot during the dark period, then something is wrong. Then the natural flow of your energy and emotions stagnates and you get stuck in a winter dip.

Deep emotions come up

The natural energy of autumn and winter has turned inward. The yin energy is more prominent than the yang energy during this period. Deeper and sometimes suppressed feelings of sadness and fear come to the surface. In the spring and summer, we can more easily distract ourselves from these emotions by stepping outside and being pampered by the (sun)light.

Autumn and winter force us, as it were, to deal with these less pleasant emotions. It is very healthy to go along with this natural movement towards your darkest feelings. Only in that way can you let them go and prevent them from becoming too big and overwhelming.

Time to discharge

Winter depression occurs when your sadness or fear has become too great and you can no longer ‘see through it. A loss or trauma (repressed or not) can have such an impact on you that it swallows you up, as it were. You can no longer look at yourself and your emotions from a helicopter view and feel and let go of them in that way. The negative feelings have become so great that you have the idea that there is no longer any distinction between you and your sadness or fear. You are your emotions and you are completely paralyzed by them.

When your emotions are so overwhelming, you need to release them. By releasing the emotions of their intensity, they can become manageable feelings again. Feelings that may be part of you, but that no longer absorb you completely. You can then move through your emotions again; your energy can flow again.

Tips: move out of your depression

How do you discharge emotions? Get moving, both physically and mentally. When you feel gloomy and lifeless, it usually means that you have to force something, because you don’t feel like moving. But you don’t want to be left in the dark either, do you? So try to apply one or more of these tips every day, step by step:

  1. Go outside, rain or shine. During the day there is always sunlight in this part of the world, even if it is less strong in these months. Sunlight is good for your mood. The activity of walking or cycling also stimulates your brain to produce substances that make you feel better.
  2. Connect with other people, even if it is remotely. And I mean real contact. Tell them how you feel. Accept their help if they offer it to you. But also give something back, even if it’s just a smile or a kind word. Be aware that everyone needs loving contact. Both the giving and receiving of affection have a healing effect.
  3. Are you not (yet) able to make contact with people? Then start with an animal. Just by petting a dog, cat, or horse, hormones are released that make you happier. And animals are generally very patient listeners!
  4. Invite positive, light energy into your life. Ask the Universe out loud to bring more light and joy into your life. Symbolically burn a candle to relight the fire of your life. And ask for (professional) help from someone who makes you feel good. If your intention is to experience joy and hope in your life again, then you will definitely move there.
