We breathe constantly. No one around you knows whether you are paying attention to painful thoughts or to breathing in and out naturally. As a result, you can do this breathing exercise just about anywhere—even in the middle of a meeting at work—and as long as you keep your eyes open, no one will notice.
Here’s how to do the breathing exercise:
The following technique is especially helpful when you are experiencing some form of negativity, be it tension, anger, or something else:
- Collect your negativity in your mind in the form of black smoke and exhale it directly through your nose.
- Imagine that with each inhale you breathe in white, radiant light, a symbol of peace, love, and joy.
- Imagine that you inhale and exhale both the black smoke and the white light along with the air through your nose. Or you visualize how they come from your heart. Try both ways and see which one you prefer.
It helps to try this breathing exercise a few times when you are alone before trying it with others around you. Practice makes perfect, so practice often, even when you’re not really experiencing stress.
