What could be better than waking up in the morning and knowing that a whole day with endless possibilities awaits you? Know that you have what it takes to make it a great day! When you focus on a relaxed body and mind, you function best and you are in control. The difference between a great day and a great day can really be in what you do the first five or ten minutes after you wake up.
Tips to wake up peacefully
1. Don’t prune
Snoring seems like a gift to some, but did you know that it is not good for you? The moment your alarm goes off, you become alert and your body starts to boot. If you then fall back to light sleep, your body will become confused and if you repeat this a number of times, you will feel more and more tired.
2. Get up at the same time every day
If you get up at the same time every day, your biological clock will get used to it. Try to keep this up on the weekend as well and don’t sleep in until late. This causes your biological rhythm to get confused, making it more difficult to get up on Monday morning. If you get used to getting up at a certain time, you will see that it will become easier to get up later.
3. After the alarm clock goes off, get up quietly
When your alarm goes off, thoughts go through your head. Of course, you prefer to stay asleep for a while, but by sitting up straight you can slowly wake up. If you wake up slowly, you can get out of bed afterward and start your morning right.
Tips to relax in the morning
It’s about consciously adjusting to the day. Let the start of your day be serene, efficient, and therapeutic for your mind – and not rushed, chaotic and stressful. In this way, you learn how to consciously step outside and ground yourself, and that feels so different than flying out the door with wet hair, with a sandwich in one hand and your cup of tea in the other.
1. Yoga exercises
In the morning, your body is probably a little stiff and your mind still sleepy, so the movements flow with your breath to help you wake up peacefully. They bring energy to your spine and stretch your hamstrings, hips and shoulders so that you experience space in your body. You will enjoy it for the rest of the day. You gently focus your attention on your breathing to connect with yourself, so that you can focus, relax and deal with everything the day brings. Tara Stiles has five beautiful yoga exercises for you that you can do in the morning.
If you meditate for five to ten minutes every morning (and preferably every evening), you will notice a big difference in your daily life. You become more positive and enjoy life more intensely without being attached to it, while you can more easily accept and let go of negative events. You can even do this morning meditation by Thich Nhat Hanh in bed.
3. Enjoy the silence
Set your kitchen timer or the timer on your smartphone to ten minutes and do nothing but ‘be there. Tip: The ‘Insight timer’ app is like a kitchen timer that starts and ends with the sound of a singing bowl or bell, whatever sounds you like. This way you will not be rudely taken out of your quiet moment and you will stay relaxed longer.
4. Read books
Read inspiring books. It can be a wonderful source of energy for you. Did you know that we collect all our book lists and book tips on this page? Then you can always find inspiration there!
A healthy night’s sleep is also very important to start the day. If you do not sleep well, it is logical that your morning does not start well. Trouble falling asleep? Then, thanks to a simple breathing technique, you could be in dreamland after just a minute. American doctor Andrew Weil says on his YouTube channel that calm breathing is the key to a good night’s sleep. He also talks about the 4-7-8 technique, based on an Indian exercise.
