Why should I be grateful?

Be thankful for the little things in life. Pffff, I can sometimes get irritated by this sentence. Pronounced or written, well-intentioned but it sometimes makes my blood boil.

Everything in me rebellious

When I’m tired or cranky (ie clearly overstimulated), I can’t think of what to be thankful for. Then I find it unctuous and floating. Then everything in me revolts. Why be thankful for the little things in life? A robin in the garden, a warm bed or a rainbow on the way. Grateful for these little things in life….well no.

Does gratitude solve my problems?

Do these ‘little things’ solve my ‘big things’? My struggles with my themes in this life? No, not that. But secretly I know that it does matter.

Somewhere in the back of my mind there’s a voice that says, ‘Calm down’. Grateful doesn’t mean you deny or don’t take the “big things” in your life seriously. It means that despite the big things, or maybe thanks to the big things, you learn to appreciate the small things more. That you will see more in perspective and that you can (learn to) put things into perspective.

It makes the ‘big things’ a little less heavy

Being grateful for the little things in life makes carrying the big things, your struggles, a little less heavy.

But how do you do that? Are you grateful for the little things in life?

  1.  First of all, give yourself permission to be grateful for the little things in life. huh? Yes, give yourself permission to be thankful. It doesn’t mean that you don’t take yourself and your struggles seriously. That’s why you take them seriously.
  2. Do you find it difficult to think of something to be thankful for? Try to look at yourself through the eyes of someone else. What can you see that someone else would be grateful for if he or she were in your shoes? Otherwise, ask a friend and write it down.
  3.  The things in our lives that seem obvious are often the things to be thankful for. Being together with your family, the roof on your house, running water; the clichés are often so incredibly true!
  4. Finally, be thankful and then what? At times when you are having a hard time or just don’t feel like it. Grab your list(s) with gratitude and try to feel, see, taste these things again. In short, connect with everything, no matter how small, that you are grateful for. From gratitude for the small things in your life, space is created for development and healing of the big things in your life.
